Iron on beaches

For a while I have been finding small pieces of iron at various beaches in my area. Is this common to most beaches and are these parts of ships?

Most pieces are thin (irregular shapes) but some are bigger and thicker (several layers). See photo below.

I don't have a problem finding them, using the Excal they are nulled out, but I do see small pieces on the beach though.
 

Yes, that is what is nice about the Excal and it will find a gold ring right next to one of those :)
 

iron hull bits are quite common near modern wreck areas -- Ivan
