🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Iron/lead weight

This desk belonged to my wife’s great grandfather and we are baffled by this weight mounted under it. We can’t see any purpose for it…. Does anyone know what it is? Thank You

It looks more like a brace or shelf bracket than a weight. Perhaps something heavy once sat above it?

That first photo also looks like one of the boards above it has a crack in it. Perhaps it was added to brace that board so it wouldn't split?
