I just got back from scouting a new area...very near to where I've found Civil War relics and early 19th century house items here in west central Mississippi.
This site was littered with old pottery. I've included some of these pieces in the picture here - Blue Edge and transferware types, and one shard of a plate that I believe says "ironstone".
This tells me that this site is old. But what is this iron object I found. I thought it might be sometype of tent stake but it was threaded from the bottom of the piece to about 3/4 of the way up.
Any idea what this could have been to? ff01.JPGff02.JPGff03.JPG

What about this...

The loop portion of your find - from what I can tell - looks to be flattened and very circular on the inside as if a pin of some type had been turning in it. Maybe part of a gate/door hinge? These photos give you an idea of what I mean. (use you favorite search engine to search "gate hinge eye bolt")

I have seen in the past another option for which I cannot come up with a name other than "hook bolt". It could be a bolt-type retaining strap for some type of pipe or heavy rod to hold the rod firmly to a wall or floor.

Just some options but nothing I can state "fer sher".

BTW, I like the pottery shards...I always keep my eyes on the freshly plowed fields around here for "signs of past life".

Keep diggin'!

Respectfully,

Batch

I've found a couple very similar up here in New England with a somewhat pointed or sharpened end but without any thread. I have to think they were meant to be driven into something. I hope someone enlightens us.
