I got out for a couple of hours today but didn't find much. A storm came up, so I spent some time cleaning some old finds in the garage. This object was just a rusted iron blob before I cleaned it and was able to seperate the two chains. I've found about five of these in the fields, but this is the first one I've cleaned. I think it is part of an animal trap, but I am not sure. Does anyone know for sure, and if so, is it an old style trap of one of those of a design that survived the ages?

This is a sample of an old barbed wire fence I found some time back under brush in woods near my house. There was a ton of it there, so I only took the sample in hopes of trying to ID it. I know there are barbed wire collectors out there. I tried to match it up with some examples shown on the net but I am not sure if I found anything that matches exact. Anyone have an idea of the design type and possible age?

Thanks to everyone for having a look.

the old chain looks like the two ends of an old dog choker

It looks modern. Here are some old animal traps to compare.

The type of links and two loops seems to be what Seeker stated , a dog choker collar.
The barb wire looks like cheap wire used when I was a kid, that was seventy five years ago, so no telling how old it is.
I love looking at the old junk we find, it is history. For old duffers like me it brings back memorys.
That wire brings to mind when a storm was comming up and I was crossing a fence like that. It had a static charge and knocked me about fifteen feet. That is something you don't forget. Thanks for showing. GNewt

The above website might help you identify your barbed wire. It seems to me wire collectors want an 18" strand, that's the standard length collectors desire. You may want to keep that in mind if you come across old wire and want to sell or collect it. Happy hunting.
Good to know about the barbed wire. I saved to favorites in case I find any of the rarer types.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. As far as the barbed wire goes, there was a ton of the stuff out there, so I'll have to go find a choice section to snip off and save.

As far as collecting unusual things, there are actually people who collect airline vomit bags: http://www.bagophily.com/

Could also be a chin strap for a halter setup.

I have to agree with Stefen. I've seen them in use on halters & bridles. More like then broken chain in the post and not so much as in the attached pic.

As TT said,
People collect some weird stuff.
I have never seen a horse bridle with chain like that.
I collect horse tack.

As far as torture devices,... there are some bridles that i would get after you for using,
just because of the cruelty factor.

This is as close to your chains as I could get with a horse bridle.
here is a Picture of a Spanish one circa 1590 -1830
This one is in the local Museum. I use the picture to reference part of my collection.
I have found some pieces of several like this.
also attached are some pics of some of the pieces.
