In Civil War Areas where I have Dug a Few buttons of this type (as well as others I know).

We always called them " Underwear" buttons. That were fro the Civil War (Most likely).

As for your bullet frag , Is the Patina White ? this don;t always matter tho, The only Civil War Bullets that show that XXXX,
pattern were Pistol 36 cal 44 cal that were made at the Watervlite Arsenal.

Could be Modern to , IMO Your site "Could' date to before the Civil War to years After.
Just my best Guess.

Iron 4-hole buttons were made long before and long after the civil war. They're still being manufactured today. At the time of the civil war, and on into the first half of the 20th-Century, they were used on "longjohns" underwear, vests, for pants-waist closure, and pants-fly closure, among other uses. Thus, they're difficult to time-date with any accuracy. All I can say is that yours, being "somewhat thick" iron rather than thin stamped sheet-iron, is probably from sometime in the 1800s.

great thanks guys, I had a date of 1820's on my site and was a little disappointed finding a 4 hole among flat buttons, I thought those were much more modern good to hear my date can hold.
