iron and steel scrap

I'm lucky as our town has a metal recycling facility about 3 miles from the house. When I cleaned out an old shed on my property, I filled the bed of my p/u truck. Had copper, aluminum and brass separated out and they weighed those individually. For the rest they have you drive over a trucker's scale, then dump the scrap and re-weigh so they know how much scrap you dumped. I think I got about $ .09/pound last summer, but there was a lot of rusty iron (nails I've found) and other stuff. They'll take pretty much everything with metal in it, but you don't get much per pound like that....I'm talking microwaves, etc, that have stuff other than metal inside.

So to answer you question, yes, you can definitely scrap less than a ton at a time! Small loads don't yield much $$, but it's not going to a landfill, and even a little bit of $$ is better than nothing!

Have fun!

A buddy of mine does this for a living! He hauls metal almost every day and sometimes 3 times a day. They will take whatever you have. If you take aluminum you need to remove all screws and hardware that is not aluminum or they call it dirty aluminum and you will get a lot less for it. Copper wire is a really good seller also. So don't throw anything away that you find.

tin and steel scrap here near orlando florida is paying $8.00 for 100lbs.thats what my local scrap dealer pays me,anyone new its usally less.i usally bring in well over 10,000 to 30,000lbs a month,so i get the higher prices paid for the volume i bring in.

whitesid,

you will definately get less for under a ton. I have not checked lately but it was only a penny a pound here.

"dirty aluminum" was 2 cents a pound. I will check what it is next week for you

Hmmm "tin" (steel less then 1/8" in diameter) goes for 2.5 cents a lb here

If you have a mixed load then it's 3.25 cents a lb (some big stuff some small)

Steel (over 1/8") is 5 cents a lb here.....

I tend to bring in a lot of mixed loads, as I save all the "crap" from taking stuff apart. And then throw in any bigger stuff I find. If I were picking up tons of Steel, then I would separate between big & small.

I was only hauling in AL, Copper, Coated Copper Wire, Brass & Stainless, but was finding my dumpster was full of stuff I couldn't bring in. Now I pick it all up. I only go to 4 locations & my "mixed loads" are bringing in an extra $25 a week w/o doing much different then before, other then going to the scrap yard w/ an extra load every week.

thanks for the info.
i resently went and droped off me steel/iron. it was a mixed load i got 6.7 cents a pound. the total was $20 for 300 pounds

I am at the scrap yard just about every day. I generally haul bigger loads so I make pretty good cash. The best part about scrapping is that it is cash!!!!! Good luck all.
