Iowa Dovetails

I've been fortunate enough to be able to acquire a couple of pretty nice Iowa Dovetails in the last month. Doves are fairly rare for Iowa and most usually only found east of Des Moines. The two on the right were found in the same field in Henry County, Iowa near Mt. Pleasant by the same person. The one on the left was a walk in to the Keosaqua Iowa show in 1972 where Jim Cox purchased it from the finder. It was found in Van Buren County, Iowa. The middle one measures 4-3/16" long and is quite thin and pretty much first stage with maybe one slight resharpening. Doves of this quality are getting tough to get so to get three within a few weeks is like Christmas...kinda.

Mt Pleasant, Keosaqua, Van Buren County.... now your talking my home stompin' grounds! I grew up just across the great Mississippi from Keokuk and Ft. Madison in a town called Nauvoo. My uncle has some land on a ridge overlooking the mississippi on the Iowa side that was the location of Sauk Indian, Chief Keokuk's village for quite a time. Beautiful country around there.

Thanks for showing the world what 3 authentic world-class Dovetails look like. The button-base type in the middle is absolutely spectacular, the other two are just plain spectacular, and your photography is quite spectacular.

Hey hippy, do you live in an area where you can find these type of projectile points? These are some very good examples of the Iowa Doves. I really like the material they are made of.

Yes, me and my family members have found probably 10 doves over the years but nothing quite as good as these. I have one personal find that is missing a part of the barb that would have been spectacular. However, there are more doves found a little to the south and east of me in central Illinois and into Indiana. We find a lot more Hardin and Thebes points in my area.
