Hello my name is Charlie and I am new to metal detecting. In fact I've never been before. I went and bought myself a new Ace 250 and am waiting for the snow to melt.

Due to having to wait for the snow to melt what should I be doing with the detector to get ready for spring?

The places that I have around here are small township beaches and fairgrounds along with some old homesteads if I can get permission to hunt them.

Thank You

Check with Michigan Badger and Lonewolfe they are legends for the Michigan area. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome MH - While waiting, try out your detector on coins, jewelry, bottle caps, pull-tabs...just about anything you can think of...so you can get used to how it responds to different objects. Make sure the TV's off (if you do it inside) and you're not around metal...sometimes putting the targets on top of a box (with no metal staples) works OK.

Welcome to the forum, Charlie.

Winter time is a great time for research. Look at your local library for old atlases. Talk to as many people you can about detecting. Ask if anyone knows where any old cellarholes/foundations are. Starting getting permission now. I take walks in the winter looking for cellarholes. You can find them if the snow isn't too deep.

Just read all you can on Tnet. You'll feel like a pro in no time. ;)

I am from Michigan too and mainly beach hunt in fresh and salt water at the coast. Read Eastern & Western Treasures magazine and visit various web sites to learn how to retreive coins with out digging a hole or making a mess. With practice you'll get better at this. I like a knife for a probe since it wedges inside a ring or pull tab without poking all around it all day. On the beachs you'll need a sand scoop and won't have to pin point. If you discriminate out pull tabs, you'll miss 90% of the gold rings.

Being new, you should test your detector on different targets to see how it sounds at different settings. Stick a nail through a ring and lay a pull tab near by also.

Good luck, your machine is a good one, so just ask away here if you need to.
