Found this site online, and been using it to gain some much needed knowledge. I am a 30something father of three, who just started doing some hiking and going to try prospecting. It looks like a hobby my kids can enjoy and it gets us into the outdoors. I am lucky enough to live a half mile from a canyon and creek, and that's pretty good considering I live here 40 miles east of L.A. I find it relaxing to be 2 hours hiking up a canyon, and a world away from the chaos. Just saying hello all, hope to have some adventures...

Welcome to TreasureNet. How old are your kids? Would they be interested in metal detecting? Seems to me that kids stay interested in things when they quickly see the rewards of their hard work. Metal detecting might be a better choice because there are so many things to find ie; coins, jewelry etc. Panning would be much harder IMO and I think they might get bored with it, especially if they're young.

Good luck and Happy Hunting!! :hello:

My kids are youngins. 7,5 and 4. My two boys are the younger, but they like playing in water and mud...so they'll become my classifier commandos. My daughter seemed pretty interested so far, but we'll see. It's going to be more about the getting there and the views, than about gold nuggets. I had never looked into metal detectors until recently, pretty pricey.
Maybe by spring.
