I was metal detecting the old pounded out green in our town which always gives up something. I found the usual clad and junk but also found a nice sterling ring, a "big" sterling earring and an old brass and bakelite cigar holder (will post pic later). A family (mom, dad and kid) were riding their bikes and stopped to lay out a blanket and enjoy the sunny day. The boy who was probable about eight was curious and kept riding his bike past me to see what I was doing. The mom and dad were keeping a watchful eye on him, so I smiled and asked if he knew what a metal detector was. He nodded yes rode away and came back a few times to ask if I found anything good. I waited till I got a good signal that I knew was a quarter and looked over at the three who were sitting and sort of watching me. I yelled to the dad " Does he want to dig one"? Well he came running over all excited. I showed him the reading on my DFX and said "so, what do you think it is"? He looked at the screen and said "a quarter'? Well lets see I said. I showed him how to dig a horseshoe plug, I rechecked the hole. it was still in there, so I took a hand full of dirt out and put it on my towel. I scanned the pile of dirt and the detector rang off. I showed him how to use the pinpointer and let him find the quarter himself. You should have seen his face!! You'd think he found the "Saxon Horde" I said to him "you can keep it, it is your first treasure! His parents came running over and we talked about metal detecting for quite awhile. They were so grateful. I didn't really find to much today but the look on the boys face was better than anything I could have found. I bet I know what he will be asking for this Christmas.. Rich.
