Interesting screw top of some type !?

That was a common knob back in the 50’s and 60’s, typical of something that would have been used on a radio dial. It would have screwed onto a shaft that had a machined or drilled hole in it. After the knob was screwed onto the shaft, and when the holes matched up on both the knob and shaft, a set screw, spring pin or some other kind of keeper would be placed into the matching holes.That configuration would allow the knob to work both ways without unscrewing from the shaft.
