This is a most interesting pottery fragment taken from the bank of a natural dirt cavitation in Wash ita county, Oklahoma. It has a most interesting design at the rim. The campsite is of the Wichita Indians (of Caddoan persuasion) believed to be about 1450. I've never seen such a design and can't help but wonder if this was functional or simply embellishment. Any ideas or similar finds?

Nice large chunk Doc. I would say functional handles with a little style thrown in at the rim. Nice find looked whole for a second.
Happy huntin Doc !

Nice big piece instead of the thumb nail size pieces you find a lot of the time. Interesting design for sure.

Perhaps there was the same detail on the opposite side and was used to hold a utensil in place or keep it from rolling off?

Not sure if it served another purpose or not Doc, but probably just adornment. I have seen the same rim treatment on Mississippian ceramics in several places. Noded, stepped, scalloped, fillet, etc....all rim styles that occur with some frequency.

That's really cool Doc :icon_thumleft: Nice to have the handle, and a little something extra on it. :hello:

Cool find docmann,
I can imagine it having a utilitarian function as well as some personal artistic expression also. The vessel seems to be on the order of a single individual use item or atleast in the smaller serving portion size whatever its use and design. Very interesting. Nice find...

Very neat. Maybe on the other side was the head of a bird and the points you have are the tail feathers sticking up. I'm a big dreamer...d2

It seems to me that if the vessel contained a liquid with some minor flotsam of one form or another, the flotsam might have gotten caught on the triangle shapes while still allowing liquids to pass through in the base of the triangles. Just a common guess, for what it's worth.

Of course, they probably wouldn't be pouring over the handle would they............ :)

cool piece, I found a piece very similar at a site in west virginia. I think it was just for looks.
