Relic Hunting

I've driven by this site for years and decided I needed to investigate it on Sunday morning. It's located on the top of a rise in the middle of a farm field. Once on site I immediately noticed large pottery, glass and sealer jar fragments, so I turned on the detector and started to hunt the field surrounding the house site. The grass on the site was almost knee high which made getting the detector close to the ground difficult, so the finds here were minimal. Most of the interesting stuff was found in the field, the old relics I found in the long grass were the overalls button and the pocket watch part. I'll definitely have to come back next spring before the grass pops up! :laughing7:

The finds aren't much to look at but are interesting just the same!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

The cover with the 9 fleur-de-lis is different, is it off a compact? See you got another horseshoe :) Nice selection of buckles as well. The site looks like a return visit when the grasses die off once again. Good to see you managed to get out on the weekend Dave.

Nice pix, I like the watch cover and love that bottle!

Nice finds. There's definitely more goodies in there. I would go back for sure!

Nice collection of digs . Really like the bottle

Nice finds my man. I bet that there is something good hiding there! GL&HH.

Nice watch cover! Great little latch too. Congrats! Interesting site with potential! Good that you checked it out.
I can't tell you how many sites I have watched slip away here.

That is indeed an interesting assortment, especially that very decorative round thing, maybe a lid to something?

Definitely looks like that place needs some more time, love all the buckles!!

Good finds Dave. Hope next spring proves you right when you return to the grassy area.

That is really cool! I live near some places like this. Did you get permission to hunt this area? I would love to go detect around areas like this near me, but I am not sure if I have to go through the hassle of seeking out a possible owner before I go hunt.

The fleur-de-lis is a nickel plated door bell ringer cover J. I'll post a pic of the inside of thefleur-de-lis doorbell ringer cover at the bottom of this thread.

You know how much I love finding horseshoes... just did a basement count and I've found 16 complete shoes in 4+ years of detecting. :laughing7:
See you again in a couple of weeks,
Dave

Thanks very much Brad!
I wish the bottle was older, but beggars can't be choosers!

Best of luck to you,
Dave

I think a return trip next spring is definitely in the cards! :occasion14:
Hopefully the site will still be there, as the site is scheduled for new homes.
Dave

Thanks for your post 46Wheat, at least it wasn't broken! :laughing7:
Dave

I would bring a spring steel probe and do some poking around to see what lies beneath

I hear you bud, with a name like 'MuckyBottles' you must be an outhouse searcher!
Thanks for your post,
Dave

Thanks Tom! :occasion14:
Yeah, this site definitely has some age to it and has likely been abandoned for 60+ years, as I found nothing that dates after 1920? :icon_scratch:

I think this site has more to give as well, might hit the fields again after the fall harvest.
Dave

Thanks for your post MsBB! :hello:
It's very true, these old field sites are quickly disappearing under residential and commercial development.

I'll post a pic of the inside of thefleur-de-lis doorbell ringer cover at the bottom of this thread.
Best of luck to you this Memorial Day Weekend,
Dave

Buckles are my second favourite find next to horseshoes! :laughing7:
Dave

Thanks Dave! :occasion14:
Hope you find some Spanish silver this weekend buddy!
Dave

Nothing wrong with that hunt...I like the French themed piece!

Thanks romeo, I love finding anything that was used or seen by people on a daily basis!
Makes the find that much more special I think... like this doorbell ringer cover.
Dave

Thank you very much northwolf!
Best of luck to you in Italy.

Most people have no idea what's buried in the ground, but usually it's just like the junk I found at this old site. :icon_scratch:
Don't be afraid to ask for permission, all they can say is no. But be honest and genuine about what you want to do and why you're doing it.

I simply went to the construction site trailer, across the road from here and told the supervisor what I wanted to do and he said, "Whatever blows your hair back bud"! :laughing7:

Best of luck to you,
Dave
