We found it in grandma's attic 20 years ago , about ten years it went off to college ....with daughter (dorm room) - came back broken - we put it in the closet - just dug it out today .

It seems to be made out of laminated wood , it's very heavy . It seems like a lot work went into making this piece . We would like to find out more about it .
appreciate any info (the second 2 pics are after I took the guts out and cleaned it with Murphy's Oil Soap )

It looks homemade. It reminds me of the walnut/pine checkerboard I glued together in wood shop. Although this glued wood project is a bit nicer than mine. It looks complicated but there is a systematic way to making these 2-tone wood projects.

Hey Mo, Your lamp is inlaid wood and from the 1950s-60s era, and they are quite collectible now. Judging by the shape, I'd say yours is from the mid-1950s. Below is a website showing one similar to yours that is selling for $450 smack-a-roos! Nice find, Breezie

Interesting sale Breezie and a pretty lamp. I guess these were poplular in the 50's-60's. Thats about the time (late 60's)I made my "inlaid" checkerboard in middle school wood shop out of scrap wood. They are not really hard to make (and they are not really inlaid). . http://www.ehow.com/how_6675320_make-checker-board-cutting-board.html
I wonder if the final sale price will be anywhere near $500. :o

Here is an interesting 1931 Popular Mechanics article on how to make these imitation inlay lamps from scrap wood stock. http://tinyurl.com/28l6y52
