Hi,

I recently saw this cob at an antiques store in Ecuador. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it, or do you guys think its a replica? It looks real and is certainly gold, but I dont recognize the mintmark and even the lions and castles are strange. Any ideas?

It is most certainly a fantasy piece, not even a good replica. None of the design elements are even close. Those are some of the lamest looking lions I have ever seen. The "P" from the "PVS" (PLVS VLTRA motto) is down where there should be a "7". The ornamental dots would indicate the coin being copied is a 1716 or later. Since the "1" (which wasn't shaped like this) is present it wouldn't be after 1719. The coin copied would have been from the Lima mint.

Agreed, a obvious copy.

That same coin was posted here a few months ago. Definitely fake. What was the price?

I've communicated with the seller. It is at a shop in Ecuador. I don't think he posted it previously, so you might have seen another copy of the same fake....
