To me that piece looks like it was cast. It looks like a cast line across the hex head part. Have no idea on a guess as to what it is.

Any idea of what was used for.....myfirst thought was perhaps an old nailheader blacksmith tool.
You nailed it, I was in the dark as to what it was so took it to a local museum / history center and was told its a civil war era rivet header tool. Thanks again!

Similar to the style of a pistol barrel or cut off rifle barrel. The mushroomed end would make sense though. Also too much iron wall for the bore size.
I was thinking along those lines also, ended up going to a local museum and they identified it as a civil war era rivet header tool.

Hi Fisher77 Thanks so much, I ended taking it to a local museum and their artifact person said it was a civil war era rivet header tool. Very cool!

Thanks, I'll have to look it one up & read about it. I imagine it's made for setting rivets of some sorts.

Yes, he said there were different sized ones depending on the size of the rivet. As you can tell I'm learning as well lol lol Thats the fun part after finding relics is trying to identify them lol I call it continuing education. lol

Makes sense after you say it, but I wouldn’t have thought of it. We had a similar tool at work, for installing grommets. It seldom was used. I think McMaster Carr sells them. Thanks for the answer.
