I made this find the other day while water detecting at the beach. At first I thought it was junk and didn't make any posts. However, after looking it over I could tell something was inside.

I dug out the muck and the three items were inside. A pearl ( that didn't fit inside properly ) , the pink stone and the tan stone.

It is silver and cleaned up rather nicely, However I haven't a clue of it's origin. I would love to know if anyone can identify the writing, ( someone on another site felt it is middle eastern ), and the significance of the objects inside.

Some feel it is a amulet and may be correct but I would like to zero in on the writing, culture and the meaning of this find. Also any idea of the age.

One more thing that's unusual is the type of chain, not a very common design and may offer some clue to the origin.

Thanks everyone for looking and any help you can offer.

Wonderful find! :icon_thumleft: Looks like it could be north African or from the India area. It could be an amulet for good luck or to ward off those ''evil spirits''.

I think you are correct about the prayer box but not certain about it being Tibetan. After reading your reply I did some research and most of the Tibetan prayer boxes are a lot more ornate but even those that are not ALL have one thing in common....they all open . This one does not and only has the small opening shown in the picture.

One more thing I didn't mention, it is about the size of a half dollar. Are you certain the writing on the front is Tibetan ?

Thanks so much for your input.

Thanks to those that replied, and special thanks to unclemac for zeroing in on my find.

I'm still not going to post solved yet because I'm going to try and narrow down the culture.

Well, the prayer box turned out to be "cremation jewelry" and fortunately the remains were still on my workbench. I will put everything back the way it was and return it to where it was found.

I am curious, How do you know thats what it is?
If it is what you say I would think the owner would like it back.I think they were meant for keeping not burying.

exactly. Its meant to hold the ashes of a loved one with you for special occasions. If it was not asian in design it would be a snuffbox neckalce which were popular for upper class women of the late Victorian period.

I'm convinced it is something that was lost by accident-- not deliberately placed. If you thought it was junk at first, it had been there quite awhile. Chance of finding the person who lost it = very very small. Its your call whether you want to put it back, but do treat it with care and respect.

The symbol posted by Pippinwhitepaws is Muslim. If the symbol on your charm matches, you'll at least have the religious context.

are you inclined to give out false information?
the symbol I posted is Sanskrit, BUDDIST symbolism...NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH MUSLIMS OR ISLAM.

here is a line drawing so you can focus on the reality that Sanskrit is older than any Arabic or Persian symbolism.

Thanks to those that took the time to reply. :icon_thumleft:

Yes, it did appear to have been lost for some time and although we never positively identified the culture I am convienced that it was in fact a cremation box. :angel7:

Although we will never know if it was lost accidently or intentioninally thrown into the ocean, I did not feel comfortable keeping it. I took the 90 minute drive this morning and threw it back where it was found.
