This morning my nephew and I went on a hunt. We first started out in the corn where we have knife blades and a grooved axe. We looked there until it became unbearable to walk the rows anymore. Next stop was the Dalton Desert. I have never found any Daltons here but others have. I have found some really nice Hardins here though in the past. The wind was blowing a little so it wasn't too bad but it's a huge area to cover and most of the good stuff is a long walk. We spent an hour or so on here and decided to go elsewhere. We moved across the creek and hunted for almost an hour. Tired and wore out we decided we wanted to sit but still wanted to look. We decided to go dig in the shade along an old Indian trail. Back in the spring we found some nice hardstones here which included a large grinding stone that was turned upside down. Later in the spring I decided to dig the area where we found the grinding stone and I found a nice corner notch. So we decided to go to this particular location and dig. I started to dig where I found the corner notch but the rise above me looked inviting so I decided to move up. Normally when we dig the only thing we use are knives. You don't move a whole lot of dirt but you very rarely miss anything. My nephew started hitting chert and when he did he really pulled out quite a bit. He pulled out several cores and some scrapers as well as just large flakes. We dug a little longer but started to loose intrest. We had talked about going to another place to dig where we find large amounts of pottery falling down the side of a hill. I soon hit pay dirt. I had dug out a nice hole and hit something in the bottom of it. I opened the hole up a bit and could tell it was hardstone. I started clearing a way the dirt around it and could tell there were more. After I got those out they just kept on coming. I pulled 20 from the hole in all and then got tired. I let my nephew take over and he pulled around 10 from the hole. There were pieces of chert from about the size of a cell phone, paper plate sized grinding stones and fists sized nutting stones and hammerstones. The rise we were digging in is 20 foot long by 3 foot wide and 2 foot tall at the top of a hill and we dug very little of it. I am sure there are more hardstones there but they will have to wait until another day. Odd to say the least. Now I want to dig the whole side of the hill just to see what is there. That whole rise could be hardstones stacked up.
