I’m still working on cleaning this one. Is slow going as this old city clay is concreted on pretty good but I figure one of the experts here has to have seen this button before. It’s hard to tell what the front has one it. I think maybe 2 or three people? The back mark is pettibone mfg co Cincinnati I believe? Let me know what y’all see, thanks!

Well right after I posted this I found it. It’s a North Carolina state seal civil war button. I’ll mark it solved!

Your ID is correct except for the time-period. The Pettibone Manufacturing Company was founded in 1872, seven years after the end of the civil war.

Absolutely definitely yes, it is a post-civil-war NC State Militia uniform button. The US civil war was fought in 1861-65, and the Pettibone Manufacturing Company did not exist until 1872.

That makes sense, I just asked because it seems strange to me that there would even be an NC militia after the civil war. You would think it wouldn't exist anymore after losing.
