Found the 2 pictured items on a recent hunt to upstate NY (where I got my 1st large cent). Can anyone provide details (type, possible age) of these to someone obviously ignorant about ammo? Both are heavy for their size. I do think I remember reading that white-colored musket balls or shot (like the one pictured though it looks grayer in the pic) are older b/c they are lead and not iron (the latter is usually brown/orange rust-colored), but what do I know? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. Peace and HH.

The ball looks like a squirrel gun ball as its too small to be a musket ball. The other one almost looks like it would have been put in a casing so not really that old.

Can you take another picture using a ruler as a reference? From the one you posted the slug looks about right for a 12 gauge, and the ball about .50 cal, but I really can't do more than guess without a real measurement.

The larger bullet is a modern muzzle loading bullet. It appears to be a Buffalo Bullet. Very popular about 15 or 20 years ago. Still very common to see in use at the range.:icon_thumleft:

The large one appears to be a fairly modern .56 cal bullet, muzzle loader as TNGUNS said. I'd think the round ball is a .44. I don't think the ball is very old, I have some that I fired and dug up that look very similar.

Thanks for all the replies. Good to get some background, especially for someone like me who has no prior knowledge in this area. HH.
