Found this metal blob about 50’ away from an 1800’s farmhouse foundation this morning. It did not pass the silver acid test or aluminum and spit rotten egg test. Heavier than aluminum, slightly less than lead. Does not mark paper like lead, can’t gouge with a knife blade like lead. About 50% as magnetic as iron. Came out of the ground looking like tarnished silver, after cleaning with a brush and soap, retaining its tarnished look. Any ideas?

Also range up as a solid 17 on the Nox.

Can't tell but it is definitely a man made "melt". It begs a lot of questions.

That is curious. Perhaps the unintended product of a building fire? I also have a few questions ; what is the “ rotten egg spit test”? And, have you ever found a blob that wasn’t interesting? Nice find, keep us posted

Perfect pictures and description... Textbook "what is it" posting imo.

As far as your find in concerned... perhaps stainless. - ?
It has a lot of properties of stainless steel, but I think making and melting stainless is a complicated process. Coming from the steel city makes me an expert in steel mfg, jk...

I’m picturing someone 100+ years ago ladling / skimming impurities off their melted metal and discarding the molten metal in the dirt.

I think lead on the 17.
17 is an odd # for me with the Nox at my old woods sites. Only keeper at 17 was a Trime, but most often 17 has been rusty nails.

Yes, discarding an aluminum can in a camp fire leaves the traditional modern metal blob. Old sites often have lead blobs of all shapes and sizes. I am very familiar with these finds. I’m not discounting that this could be a blob of tin or pewter or some other old world metal concoction.

“Rotten Egg Spit Test”= take a piece of tarnished solid silver and spit on a piece of aluminum foil, rub it and their is a chemical reaction that creates some heat and gives off a distinct rotten egg smell.

Now I remember why I refrain from solving this users posts... Oh well... "doods" loss. heh

Thought I would make an attempt to extend a hand by complimenting the "user" on post as to perhaps "start anew / build"

Not even so much as acknowledgement... so that is that... Wont make that mistake again... just plain rude.

Post / compliment deleted.

It was a nicely laid out post I must agree, almost as if he had a private production company at his finger tips

My bad. Thx you for the positive message on the structure of this post. I tried to be as thorough as possible because we all have seen aluminum blobs posted by members thinking they found silver. This is definitely not silver and I was sarcastic saying it was not stainless steel with my jk expert note. Sorry again and appreciate your input.
