A quarter. hahaha, no but really i think i might know. or at least can tell something about it. because there are adjustable parts we can assume that it was something used by a person ( kinda like how some metal detectors had adjustable arm rests. ) and the plate that is adjustable is smoothed and curved, which indicated that it is shaped for comfort ( think of the piece on a violin that a person puts their chin. ) I dont know its specifics but what I told you might be able to help.

PAT. SEPT. 29 96 is the writing on the bottom of the unit...prosthesis thingy???

I notice at the bottom of the picture is says "truss". A truss was sesigned to be worn by a male to keep a hernia in place. They were real popular before the surgical procedure was perfected to repair a hernia. Monty

It would have been covered with cloth and a thick pad (probably leather) over the part that supports the hernia. The whole thing would have been either attached to a belt or would have come with a belt to attach it to. There was dozens of models to choose from. My dad had one he wore while he was waiting to get an ok for surjery from the VA. Now go wash your hands!
