Hello to all. I stumbled across your website and have been interested in hunting for years. I think it's finally time to give it a go. After reading a few of the posts, I have a few questions and was hoping you could help me out.

1) What is clay?
2) Any suggestions on an economical metal detector to buy for a 1st timer. Not too sophisticated and pretty user friendly?
3) Are Park District and Forest Preserve lands free to hunt on?
4) On a completely separate note, does anyone know of any companies that offer gold searches in Nevada?

I'm pretty excited about the prospect of finding some historical items. I live near just off the Fox River in Illinois, an area that has seen some pretty exciting historical events pass through it.

Thanks for any help you can provide me with.

Jason,

welcome to the board.

It's not to late to change your mind. You still have a chance.
Are you sure you want to commit into this type of life?

Think you may be thinking of "clad", newer coins.

Tons of post on detectors for starters on the board. Depends on
what your hunting and what you want to spend.

Check your local regulations, all different.

Where is NEVADA ???
;)

have a good un.........

Welcome!
Answer to your questions.
1) I assume you mean as in soil. Clay is just that... clay. very hard to dig in when its dry.
2) A lot of people new to the hobby think that the Garrett 250 is a good detector, and relatively inexpensive.
3) NO! If its Federal land. Maybe if its State land, But you need to check to make sure.
4) Try the GPAA (Gold Prospectors of America).
Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I believe there has been some pretty good ideas and suggestions already offered. I guess the main thing to keep in mind is what type of hunting will you be doing, what type of budget you have, and what determination you have. There are all sorts of user friendly models available at a good price, and it goes up from there. I think that most beginner should try coin shooting first to see if they really like the hobby. I coin shoot quite a bit and really go crazy sometimes. I use a low end model for this. I also have a Hunting partner (trk5capt) that loves to relic hunt civil war ect. Now I do use a higher end model for this. All this is just my opinion, and you are the one that has to make the decisions. Let the people on the forum express there opinions and go from there. email me anytime with any questions you have. HH (happy hunting), Art...
