Hi

I recently bought this candlestick and cannot find any information on it. It's spring loaded and the only bit of information or makers mark is on the cartridge to hold the candle. REF No 525 Mason. I'm assuming this is the Mason Candlelight Co. Middlesex NJ. Did they supply this to somebody else or did they manufacter the candleswtick as well. It's 7 3/4" high and the top is 5 1/2" dia. I've no idea on age but by the design I'm assuming 60's or 70's. Any help would be appreciated.

just asking - what about this item tells you its a candle stick holder?
im not seeing how the rod , last picture , is part of the original image
thinking this may have another purpose

These lamps were candle-powered but you needed a particular candle of specific dimensions. The refills were sold as "cartridge candles" and these are number 525 Slim cartridge candles (140 x 18mm) with a burn time of 7-8 hours to fit Albert, Parisienne and Saturn (sometimes incorrectly called Sputnik) lamps:

Hi

Thank you all for the information. My grandson is really into vintage or antique items, he buys from second hand shops then we have fun getting information about them.

Just realised your original questions went unanswered. The Mason Candlelight Company has been around for a long time (I think since the 1800s). They were based in Green Brook NJ until around 1970 and then Middlesex NJ, having been acquired by Standex International.

I have seen similar ‘retro’ designs (although not specifically this ‘Saturn’ design) in the UK with the same candle cartridge reference number. Those had some safety advice stuck on the underside of the base carrying the Standex name and so must have been produced after 1970.

Mason Candlelight still exists, operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Standex. There are a few specialist lighting suppliers who have back-stocks of candles to fit these cartridges (the picture I provided came from one such company’s website).
