I was wondering about the Sumpter area, is there anyone on this forum, or knows who to contact, that knows what areas and or tailings piles are open to public for foraging for nuggies? Later this year when I'm over in John Day visiting me mum I could make a run up there, it'a not that far, and see if I can find a nice chunck of yella it put in my ring.

gramps, i worked the area last summer. as far as i know the area around sumpter is all private property or claimed, i was on private property. i hear that Macaulay forks camp ground is open to panning. the locals do not take kindly to tresspassing or claim jumping. get permission first. many will give permission. i will be back there mid july though august again, dredging private property i also have permission to work two claims in granite a little north of sumpter. highdesertranger.

I was over there the year before last and I believe right at the head of Phillips Res. the land is dept of fish and wildlife or some other public land. Anyway I did a little detecting on the tailing piles there. Didn't find any gold but I didn't spend much time there. Anyway you might check it out there. Doug.

Gramps,
Google Boulder Patch Mines and get a hold of Digger Dan, he's in Sumpter. Might also talk to Rita at Ritas Relics in Sweethome , I believe she has been there or knows someone there, phone# 1-866-367-4061. If that doesn't work let me know.

Thanks all for the info it's very much appreciated.
