Nice find Ms. Bates.
The construction looks pretty modern and by 'modern' I mean made after WWII.
"The U.S. Army changed to the Great Seal button in 1902, which made obsolete all of the state buttons, all the separate army organizations, all the separate letter eagle buttons, even separate buttons for general staff. “One style for all arms and all grades, private to Lt. General. The only exception is the Engineer Corps, who are to retain their present design. Bronze for service and gilt for dress."

I'm just curious as to the metal since its not rusted I'm not sure what it is..not brass copper silver or gold what is left. Most of what I find (I'm still in my own backyard) is late 1800 to 1940.
just a small sample of finds from a WW I training camp
yours looks similar to the upper center button - though mine does have light back mark on it - it is brass but mine
was painted black - they did paint some black back then
lower center is great seal - brass with gold gilt
if you look on google for guys that collect militeria or army collectors - im sure you may find someone to help better
unless its actually not a coat or uniform button - maybe it was made for something else military
the obverse looks too good to be for like a kids jacket like the coat of arms buttons they made for jackets
