Got in the water again Sunday for a few hours. Just got my Infinium back from Garrett so I missed a couple of months of hunting. Didn't take them that long to fix it, I just took a while to send it off. They updated it and did some fine tuning.

I tried this hunt with the stock 11 x 14 DD coil. Took a little work but I got comfortable with it by doing a figure 8 type search swing pattern. It moves through the water better that way. I wanted to cover more water and tried this coil as opposed to the 8 inch mono I had been using.

I hit the small gold ring in about 5 minutes, my first European Gold 9k, then followed that up with three other rings, two junk and one Silver. One junk ring was home made. I thought it was part of a boat motor. It is inscribed inside "To T.O. Love Dad".

I only worked a small portion of the surf. I was afraid to move too far from my gear on the beach since I had a clown try to steal my stuff back a couple of months ago. I guess I will just have to leave my bag in the car and make the walk when I need something. I didn't hunt the best part of the surf where all the folks were.

Still loving the Infinium.

Very nice hunt indeed! How do you like the larger coil compared to the 8" mono? I have never heard of the "figure eight" coil swing. It sounds very interesting. Nearly all of my hunts have been with the 8" mono coil. I take it you pinpointed on the front toe of the coil?

I have to wait another 5 months before the ice thaws! Thanks for such a nice post. It kinda keeps the spirit alive for me. ;D

Hey John. I really like the 8 inch coil better but I had a large area to cover so I opted for the larger coil. I did pinpoint with the toe of the coil and it worked fine. I really need a larger/better scoop though. I have a 7 inch bucket on mine but I need a better design. I met a guy this weekend who makes scoops and I am going to see if he will make me one that is more to my liking.

Sorry you are in the winter period but what some beautiful sights you are posting with the photos. I guess if you were born and raised there, it is something that you are accustomed to. I am from the south but not Florida. I don't particularly care for Florida. My job brought me here and I am taking advantage of hunting when and where I can. I only land hunted before moving here and since there is so much water here, I knew I had to take advantage of what was here. Can't freshwater hunt here due to the Alligators. That is a shame since I know that there is probably some good stuff left behind before the Gators made there comeback. You can't swim in anything here that is warm and fresh!

Have you ever used the 5 X 10 DD coil in water? I thought that may be a happy medium. I don't own one. I do have the little 3 X 7 but I am not sure you can get them wet since they are not the epoxy based coils. I am sure that they try to float if you put them in water.

I hope to get in the water again soon. I had to purchase a wetsuit because the water even here is getting too cold to stay in for any length of time without one.

Take Care

I don't own the 5 x 10, but you are right, it would make a great compromise. I have used the 3 x 7 in the water and on land. I miracuosly found a ring during a hunt in the woods a couple of weeks ago. My hunting partner always uses his large DD coil and has done extremely well with his. I just may keep my eyes and thoughts on that 5" x 10" coil.

All the best Jim. Good luck in 2008 (although you are well on your way so far) ;D

John.

I saw that 3X7 find that you made. I have that coil also but have only used it once so far and that was in a really trashy area right when my Infinium started going bad. I have another location I want to use it in. It is an old park with a swim area near my Mother's house in the Panhandle of Florida. That old swim area has been there for many years. I pulled an old wedding ring from there a few years ago with a Whites PI. Lots of trash in the water there but I believe the 3X7 might do the trick. I am going to add that 5X10 hopefully after Christmas and I will have everything but the 11X14 mono.

I truly believe the Infinium is the better water machine out there right now. I have not been blanked yet. I know I probably will one day but it sure is nice hunting with the confidence that the Infinium is giving me in the surf. I would really like to try it in fresh water also. I don't live near any that I can get into right now. Gators in everything around here will eat yah!

I would really like to hunt some creeks and shallows in rivers where folks tube, kayak and canoe. Cold wet hands + rocky shallow bottoms should yield some good finds with that 3X7 to look in the crevices with.

Take care and stay warm.

Jim
