I traded in my Excel to Southern Treasures toward a Wader but had problems with the latter and thanks to Brian's helpfulness, switched to an Edge, instead.
Initial Observations:
With the Excel and Edge the trick to applying the coil cover is to immerse it in a pot or pan with hot tap water (not too hot to touch). After 20 minutes, dry it and it will easily slip onto the coil.
Indoor bench testing wasn't possible, too much interference. As an experiment, I covered the control housing and cable with Al foil, but that didn't help.
When I arrived at a local park this morning for my first session with the Edge, setting the sensitivity to 6 eliminated all interference. I used the notch to reject zinc pennies and set the discrim to 5. Much of the park was frozen solid (even here in Portland, OR!), but in 45 minutes I found 4 quarters, 6 dimes, 2 nickels and 6 pennies. The tone for nickels and pinpoint may have changed slightly from the Excel, but is very pleasant to listen to.
I look forward to extensive park searches in the jewelry mode or in the old coin mode.
In summary, it looks to be an excellent machine but it won't always be possible to avoid turning the sensitivity way down. And Brian at Southern Treasures runs an excellent operation.
