I took a few days and flew back to Kansas to visit family and friends and took my DFX along. It was the first time I have taken the machine on the plane with me. There is so much history there I wish that I would have had more time. It was nice to sit in the cafe early in the morning and listen to the older locals tell me stories. One was that Charles Lindbergh landed close to town to get gas. Or the one where soldiers were attacked by indians and the lone survivor said they buried the gold payroll shipment before he died. I told my dad that I did not have much time to hunt and asked him where would be a good place to find old coins. He told me of an old church campground that used to have carnivals back in the 1930's and that the Boy Scouts used to camp there at that time. He said he remembered his grandmother telling him of riding in a horse and buggy to get there, probably late 1800's. He then told me that the property is out in the middle of nowhere and that he is pretty sure that no one has ever hunted it. Boy he was right. In two hours we found several Indian head pennies, wheat pennies, some mercury dimes, buttons and other nice finds. My finds are 1874, 1894, 1903, 1906 Indian head pennies. 1910, 1911, 1920 wheat pennies, 2 cent Kansas sales tax token, 1940-s and 1942-s mercury dimes, 3 buttons of some sort, 1 button with nice gilt, 1 ring with cut amber stone, 2 spoons and a pocket knife with looks like pearl sides. Now this is the type of hunt that I like to go on where the newest coin found is 1942. I can't wait to go back and hunt where they parked their model A's and buggies. This property is owned by some distant family memers of mine. There are so many old rock houses from the 1800's that I would love to hunt as well. Anyway this was not a bad hunt for two hours. Just wish I had more time.

More photos. The tax token and some pictures of the property. The old rock house is just one of about 50 that I saw and the other pictures are of an old town that is no longer there and they made a park out of it many years ago. The side walk is in front of where a row of stores used to be. I hunted it for a little bit but the heat was just too unbearable at the time. I would love to get back into the woods and hunt this in the winter time. Right now there are just too many rattlesnakes to take a chance. We saw a 4 ft. rattlesnake in road just before we got there. I wanted to get a picture but he was off the road by the time I backed up.

For dug pennies, those look in nice shape! especially the 1911 Wheatie :headbang:

The coins were in pretty good shape. They were mostly about 5" deep with the deepest being the 1874 indian head which was about 10" deep. The dirt was very rich and moist. This is a picture of one of the wheats in the soil. I think it was the 1920.

I also found a live blank rifle shell stamped RA 17. I believe it is from WW1. I did not want to take a chance bringing it back on the plane. I had a hard enough time getting that rusty knife through. I had to check the bag it was in. Luckily I was flying Southwest and the is no charge for checking baggage.

DUDE! LOOKS LIKE U HAD SOME GOOD HUNTIN OUT THERE. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THE CONDITION OF THOSE INJUNS! :o IF WE HAD DUG THEM HERE, THEY WOULD BE SO GREEN AND CORRODED THAT WE COULD NOT SEE THE DATES. VERY NICE HUNTIN! :headbang:

Thanks David. I too could not believe the condition. The soil was so rich and damp. They were pretty dirty and took some time to clean them. The worst coin was the 1894 indian head. I found it under the hard packed road nearby about an inch deep. Everything but the ring was found in the field by the outhouse. The ring was found just to the left of the shelter near a very large tree. I will bring everything to the next club meeting.

I'm glad you got some killer finds Randy, man I wish you couldve had a longer hunt, no telling what you wouldve found, those sites look great.

over in the big timber area huh? Don't worry, judging from the Ks. site i don't think
anyone would venture there to check it out. I'm jealous of you getting to hunt all
that sweet looking virgin territory. Bet you can't wait to get back!!

Nice finds,

That site has more. Nice old building and history.

HH Jer
