An Indiana soybean field gave up a large cent today. Finding a large cent has been high on my list of "goal coins" for years.
I just couldn't believe that I had never found one in thirty plus years of detecting. I heard about the old town site years ago,
but was quickly discouraged by the sheer size and the lack of landmarks.
Used my new detector to find the large areas of iron and trash and then used a grid to look for goodies. Found a lot of
iron relics and an 1888 Indian Head. Guess I am encouraged now, anxious to get back out there before the snow flies.
I will post another view once I get her cleaned up.

Re: Indiana Large Cent/Date Photo

Hasn't cleaned up too well yet but will stay after it.
Can make out a good date, 1851. Makes it my oldest by
ten years. Thanks for looking.

Welcome to the Large Cent club!

I remember reading a post here saying that holed coins may have been sewn into garments to keep from being lost.

Nice find!

That's the way it's done.

Nice find!

I saw a box of them in an antique store years ago.. probably over a 100 of them... the guy said he got them from and old house that was being torn down.. they were used as washers on a slate roof.. he had a mix of cents and half cents... had some story about the cost of the washers going up over a cent a piece so people started just using the cents! Seemed like he was being pretty honest about it.. but I have no idea if that was true...

Congrats on your first large cent. Hopefully there are a lot more to come.

nice LC looks good

I have also found LC's with square holes in 'em. Same story I got. Has anyone ever found quarters of LC's? I have, and the story goes; when tax on purchase's reached 1/4 of a cent, that the merchant gave the purchaser a pair of snips to cut an LC into 4 pieces to pay his 1/4 cent tax.......NGE (T)

Congrats on the LC!

Sounds to me like you found a site that will produce for a long time. I would just bet it won't be your last from that site!

Keep at it, and congrats!
