There are tons of new folks here so I'm going to post one of my whatsits again in hopes it can be identified.

I was hunting near a Montana Indian Wars era army post, near (but not in) a fort cemetary (circa 1866ish) on private land, and dug this relic. It weighs 3 pounds 4 ounces and is made of drop-forged lead. There is a counter-sunk post through the middle with some kind of bracket? The bolt and nut are not hand forged... It is 1/2 inch thick / 4 1/2 inches wide / 5 inches high.

I've sent pics out to others for help but have heard nothing back... any ideas?

Maybe an early marker of some type associated with Union Pacific?
The Union Pacific Route logo (circa 1887) looked very similar. That's all I can think of.

Take care,

Thanks watercolor... same basic shape - yes. But the "C" is not consistant with and UP signage. :( However - a railroad did run through the area eventually so I guess that's one thing to consider...

I was thinking maybe its off of a post that would indicate a section "C" in a cemetery.

I considered that... but frankly, the entire cemetary is fairly small. I could spit from one end to the other on a windy day. Despite my disagreement - your suggestion is the most plausable if it's connected to the cemetary at all...

Jim, I posted on this the first time you put it on... but I just happened to think that maybe it is a corner marker for the government owned property the cemetary is located on.

What do you think?

I remember DigEm... and I am entertaining all guesses... at first I was reluctant about it being cemetary related because it would have been a more common thing and not a big mystery. However - I'm thinking you guys might be right.

Well, it looks like it would attach to a "U" shaped post. The kind that you would hang a stop sign on. The thick piece of iron would fit into the "U" to give it more support with a shorter bolt. A longer thinner bolt would tend to bend or pull through the sign.
