Don't let the Dead Pawn idea bother you too much. These were also a major tourist item in Roadside Stands throughout the Southwest. My mother purchased one when we were on vacation in Arizona back in the early 70's. Are there any markings on any of the silver pieces? That may help as to it's origion. Also the stones look like Red Coral which was common in the 70's.

Looks Native American, coral, and definitely worth putting in the safe! I don't agree with that link's take on "dead pawn". I second the idea to check for markings on the back. If it's signed, it could be worth more.
Good luck, keep us posted!
