image.jpgimage.jpgFound this cool piece in a field. Quite heavy for its size. It is stone. Wondering if maybe it is an old piece of Indian Jewelry. Any ideas?

This was found in Northern New York, an area with a significant Native American population. It is not uncommon to find arrowheads and other artifacts in this area. That being said, I completely understand that this could be a naturally formed piece of stone. I'm not convinced of that though because this one looks quite different that other naturally cut rocks I have found. For starters it is much smaller and the edges are much more defined. Again, that being said.... Mother nature is an extremely good artist....Thank you to all who are reponding to this, I appreciate it!

Not sure this will have enough credibility to be deemed a genuine native american artifact by the artifact hunters who frequent the site?. I'll stay on the fence over this one to see if any other opinions are offered. If I was to take a guess in the light of it being something significant I could say it may be a net weight, but that's just an out there in space thought on my end. I would lean more to it being a piece of iron stone :dontknow:

Haha, your piece is a cruel joke that mother nature likes to play on eager hunters.

We find them a lot here in TX... The accepted explanation is that a portion of the stone is protected, and while partially exposed the water laps at it and causes the undercut rim... Eventually it comes loose and is tumbled/smoothed naturally... And ultimately ends up having just enough overall uniformity/symmetry to piss off the future finder.

To each their own, but I'm not one to jump into the whole 'net weight' ideal. Greater minds than any of us have published rather extensively on the subject and have offered (what i consider to be) irrefutable logic. Again, to each their own.

More pictures would/might be helpful, from the top, the bottom etc..
From your one picture it looks like it could be a Native American weight of some sort or perhaps a particular style of "Mano" found in the northwest.
Mother Nature can create similar shapes but archeologists have also documented many, many such weights and Mano's in the context of village site and mortuary site digs.
Here are pictures and a little info. about a "circular Mano" found in Oregon...ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1447475451.017613.jpg

After looking again at your picture with the nickel for "scale" your rock is definitely to small for a Mano, in spite of the apparent similarities, which leaves me thinking a weight of some sort or just a natural formation. Where did you find it, what state? Did you find it in an area where other artifacts have been found?

How about providing additional info regarding where and how it was found, and its relationship to NAI's...

Looks like natural erosion of a softer layer of stone between two harder layers of stone, just my opinion.

it's so nice that everyone's being nice. No, we don't all agree, but there's no need to slam others or their things. :cat: i will say that it's certainly possible that it could have been used by the natives for some purpose. so much depends on the other questions : context ? is the site producing other artifacts ? known indian site ? i do think it means something when an object is a little too perfect.... it seems to have been shaped, polished, used. I've collected thousands of "just rocks", including eroded ones, but they didn't look as neat and perfect as this one does.It doesn't hurt to say "it makes me think" and "could warrant more examination" and "hard to tell from the couple of pics seen." I can't see why it's bad to leave the door open, is all i'm sayin. that, and "give peacea chance."

You do know that this thread is a year old...
and Mriceguy has only this one post and never came back.
I will say though it is a very cool rock be it natural of otherwise.

I know the person who posted this thread. He found the stone while walking behind a plow on his farm.I have seen this rock and it is cool natural or otherwise. He was curious to its origin but is most likely too busy to follow up on this thread.
