I was MD up on a ridge in south east Tn. and got a signal on something and started digging around and accidently found this.......Mortar and Pestle. The interesting thing is it fits your right hand perfect. Meaning the man or woman that used this was probably left handed. Ive never priced anything like this before and am just curious if it has any value at all.

Randy are sure it is not natural? I live in that area and have a bunch I have dug and they are usually larger and were used to process hickory nuts. An item is worth what someone is willing to pay :tongue3:

I took it to get an authenticated and from what they told me its the real deal. I just never asked the value....I would never sell anything I just love the history and appreciate the past and was curious about the value

Looking at the enlarged pictures I honestly don't see any use wear in the mortar. It might be helpful to know who authenticated it for you. It would also be helpful to see the grinding end of the pestle to check for use wear. Without better pictures I feel they are naturally formed stones.

It could have been used, but it seems a little small. If it's use is not obvious.....if you have to explain, even if it was used, it probably won't have too high of value.

I mean no disrespect by this reply but how do you figure the mortar got hollowed out...The pestle was sitting right on top of it. The wear is there 1# it fits your hand like a glove and is hollowed out....by the same object with finger wear that was sitting on top of it. This site is great cause its full of skeptics...to keep people honest...I understand that....but this was taken to a Cherokee organization that would know if or not it was natural or used as a M&P. I just never asked them the value....which was just curiosity anyway. Believe what you will I just wanted to share a rare relic to some appreciating members. Thanks
Randy

:coffee2:8-) I have seen a lot of smaller ones, even smaller than this... It appears to be "User Friendly" to me... Maybe used for small herb, medicine, paint, etc. Some nice light portable ones could be about pouch or pocket size... I think it was made, whether used heavily, or not... Just mine thoughts... It will always be worth more to you... ~: CDS :~
