INCINERATOR FIND (UPDATE)

Found this when demolishing a Model T-type garage, bunkhouse and incinerator to make room for a parking lot behind our office.

This is a cast iron fender or bumper mount 'Auto Club' emblem most likely dating from the early 1900's...there is a threaded stud that has been sheared flush to the bottom.

Cannot find any recorded history, but probably a forerunner to today's AAA

Re: Incinerator Find

It looks like it broke off a radiator cap. That would make it no newer than early 30's.

Way to go...

Got_4by4...not quite solved yet...DCMatt & savant365 found a match and possible date range...however, still need to find the history of the emblem.

The find came from a California Cottage built in 1904 in the City of Orange, Orange County, California...so we can safely say it originated in that area of the state.

The Old Towne area of Orange is a mecca for antique stores, and have never come across a duplicate yet until today.

The Auto Clubs first Orange County branch was opened in Santa Ana in 1915 so sometime after that.

Orange County Magazine

According to the article, the OC Auto Club actually started December 13th 1900 by 10 car enthusaists...

The property was also the former residence of the town jeweler...and a wealthy businessman and landowner

The one that started in 1900 was the Southern California AC, not the Orange County branch.

Re: Incinerator Find

Google books offers a snippet view of a 1921 book titled "History of Orange County, California - part 2". I can see a reference to the Auto Club of Orange County with a 1919 date. The reference is part of a biographical sketch. Can't read the rest. I'm sure you can find the book locally.

I found the full text. Here's the reference regarding Mr. W. Lester Tubbs:

On June 1, 1919, he accepted the responsibility of representing the Auto Club of Orange County as office manager at Santa Ana.

Thanks.

It helps keep the forum organized. Nothing is locked and members can disagree, add additional thoughts or research at any time. The vast majority of the members here are in agreement. We either all use it or we all dont. I am not a moderator and it took me years to get this idea working. I try to remind people to get with the system.. I can only think of one member that complained and refused to post the green check. He called me something insulting in Australian lol.

Re: Incinerator Find (UPDATE)

Just when I thought we had arrived at a final solution to the mystery...here is an e-mail recieved from the AAA archivest:

Dear Mr....

The Auto club webmaster has forwarded your query to me here at the corporate archives.

We are familiar with this emblem as we have received inquiries about it before. Unfortunately, we have no specific information on the OC club and possess no evidence that it was ever affiliated with, or was part of, the Automobile Club of Southern California.

There were a number of small local clubs throughout the country in the early days of the automobile that were organized largely for social purposes. Over time these smaller clubs either died out or were folded into larger clubs like ACSC when advocacy efforts for public funding of roads and fair motor vehicle laws were best accomplished through larger organizations. I suspect that the fate of the OC club played out along one of these lines.

I hope this information is useful. Please contact me if you have any further questions.

Sincerely, Morgan Yates

Re: Incinerator Find

Date and all other information of the auto club still remains a mystery...

Have removed the green check and placed this back on the burner...so to speak...
