They were never issued, the mint said. But Sam Brown had five of them. He said they were sold to him by various collectors around the country.

Right.

King Farouk owned two of them. One is in the Smithsonian. One of them was featured in an episode of Hawaii Five-O. And one was lost in a car wreck, and rediscovered over 40 years later.

Total value? About 20 million dollars. Not bad for twenty-five cents worth of coins that were never issued.

Hear the fascinating story now at In the Corner with Dan Hughes.

Yeah makes you wonder how many more are around, maybe even in circulation. I mean just cause they weren't issued doesn't mean Joe Blow employee didn't walk off with some of them. Not like they had to work naked, walk though X ray machines when leaving, or having TSA rubber glove inspections done on them before they left the place. All they had to do was slip some regular ones in with the mix to account for the missing ones.

Good video Dan, nice to see you posting again. I had to go all the way back to September 24th to catch up on your publications. Thanks for posting.

Control is the name of the game.
