In need of help! Where to go?

Hello, I live in central new york. I live about 5 minute walk from the new erie canal. I've hunted it one time and only found junk. I was wondering if anyone could help me find new places around my area to hunt. I am very sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forums but it was the best suited for my problem. As a suggestion, ask at your local library's Reference Desk for the Historian in your area. Contact that person and ask about 'old places'--possibly abandoned--in your area.
