I found this in an old barn that I was hired to demo. it looks like what pharmacist or pharmacy used to mix with, but this one is made of metal and very heavy. the quarter will give reference to size. it has a brass band around the bowl and one around the handle. writing on the bottom " W B & Co No.5" and under these letters it has " 6 in. " the " n" almost looks like an "h" and if it is, it would say " 6 ih " instead.

I believe that "W B & Co" may be William Bullock & Co., a well known firm of iron founders in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.

The indians from the Carribean used something similar to grind, to make casaba chips, made out of stone. Latins use something identical to grind green bananas to make tostones, but made out of wood. Your piece is pharmacy related to gind medicine. Maybe for animals.

Best,

Chagy.......

My cousin uses a mortar and pestle to crush pills for his horses and other farm animals. If it was found in a barn I would think similar use.
