I sold a few nickels on ebay, and as I was boxing them up, I noticed what I thought was a little bit of doubling on one of them. After staring at it for so long, now I can't tell if it is doubled or not, but just above one of the letters, on the rim of the coin, there is a gouge. Kind of like a splinter, I guess. I pulled this coin out of a proof set myself, so I know it happened at the mint. Is this a common error? Is it worth anything? It's not something I see ALL of the time, but I was just wondering if it is a variation worth holding on to. Any input (ok, not any input) would be very helpful. Thanks.

Why wouldnt a photo help??? All we can do is imagine what your talking about without seeing it. Can you mail it to me and I will determine if its valuable?

My camera is busted. The detail wouldn't be visible with my scanner.

I accidentally mailed the nickel to the guy anyway.

What is it called when there is a very thin layer of the exterior metal on a coin? This coin showed some characteristics of that nature, and I guess a nickel is the same color all the way through, so you wouldn't be able to tell like you can with a quarter, where tere is a big splotch of copper.
