I'm stumped....

Went out today with a guy I go to Church with and his son to an old house that's over 100 years old. No one has lived in the house for probably 20 years or more. We didn't find any coins but lots of "farm" debris. Also found these 2 items. I'm usually pretty good at having an idea what the "artifacts" are that I find, but these two still have me scratching my head. Also posting a button that I found awhile back. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Scott

Re: I'm stumped....

That's a great button! Does it look like a coin that's been "worked" to form a button, or is it just me?

Re: I'm stumped....

The top item is 7" long. If the second item were straightened out, it would be 9". The button IS a button- I can see on the side at the back that it is "two pieced". The back is pretty rough- rusted real bad with the "sewing loop" that many buttons like this should have being rusted off.

Re: I'm stumped....

The top one is a guard off of a sickle bar mower.

That picture is a modern sickle mower, perhaps my item is the same basic thing but MUCH older.....

That's what I was implying. It's still the same basic design today that is was when Cyrus McCormick patented it in 1834.

I've found a few of the guards, but it's the sections themselves that drive me nuts. They ring just like a coin on my machine. It's seems like I find at least one a week.

Re: I'm stumped....

Scott..... regarding Your first picture.... I found 4 of those this Summer and look similar and look to be hand forged iron. I found them along a very long stone wall in an area that once was farm land in the 1800's To ?
The ones I found are approx. 5 inchs long and heavy due to being made of iron. I doubt that the ones i found came off a mower as the area is to rocky and very close to the stone wall.If it is off of some sort of mower, the farmer sure must have been busy making them as I am sure he was missing quite a lot.Possibly some sort of early field plow teeth??? My detector sure went crazy with these!

Re: I'm stumped....

The first picture looks to be the foot piece for a tractor mounted fertilizer that sweeps through the dirt but i cant be sure without some differant angle pics. :)
