OK - I'm stumped. I'm hunting in your average Thurston County WA river rock front yard. I got a strong iron'ish signal off this rock, and it drives my Garrett pro-pointer nuts. It's a pretty standard pocket-marked grey rock, more light than heavy. So far I haven't found any others, so it can't be super common. What is it?

Not with the "toy" magnet I tried today. I'll get a better one tomorrow.

It is what happens when you burn coal and it coverts it to coke. Drives a metal detector crazy. My guess is its the carbon. Rocks can have iron in them as well.
One thing to look for is meteorites.

Interesting find! Sometimes I get "rocks" that set off the detector and pin Pointer; usually some type of coal. :dontknow:

Around here they used to throw the coal cinders from the stove on snowy or icy walkways, and I have run into areas almost impossible to hunt from so many hot cinders. Usually the problem was along walkways naturally.

That's what I've been chasing along my front sidewalk! House built 1949. They did use coal for heat here at one time. I've tried detecting along it, but the ground is saturated with the little pea sized and smaller nuggets ( they are magnetic ). I thought a mad welder had lived here at one time. Or cutting torch debris. Makes sense now. The things I learn from others here. Thanks!

Parts of my yard is full of it. I have so much I have actually gathered it up and used it in my old coal forge before converting to a gas forge..Kills me because I live on a battlefield and dig relics as well.. I am sure I am missing a lot because of that stuff just makes me go another direction.

There are all kinds of “hot” rocks out there.
