I'm MD'ing in the rain.....just MD'ing in the rain

Okay, it's going to be a cruddy weekend with rain but I would like to get out there and search some areas that I am interested in. What can I do to protect the control box from water/rain? Anyone have any ideas or tips on what you have used to keep the detector free from water damage? Large ziploc bag covering the control box maybe?

Thanks,

a lot of the other diehards out here use a shower cap the alastic holds it on the detector head .I went out and bought a cover for mine . It depends on the type of detector that you have some of them don't sell them. happy hunting I'm thinking about gettin out there to and boy is it rainin Diggit 8)

You can do anything with plastic grocery bags, ziplocs and some ties or duct tape.

I only metal detect at the beach when it is raining...
I use my underwater detector for that Tesoro sand shark ;)

HAHA I went the last weekend... You know how hard it is to detect in the rain...Well, I did not have that great of a time, It was just raining a little and I was in a jungle growth area, but the mud and dealing with the poncho and trying to use the detector with the rain cover I bought for the detector, well, I don't think it was worth it!
If you can deal with it ...more power to you! HAHA Just where I was was a bad idea!

okay so I wimped out!!! :o Just too much rain and since it wasn't my MD I didn't want to chance damaging it. I was able to investigate an area that I have been interested in by my house. There are a couple of stone columns that look like they may have had a gate or something attached to them. This area was listed in a 1922 map that the Library of Congress had for my city. In fact there was a road that no longer exists that (according to the map) ran right next to my property line. My house was not there in 1922, but was built within 10 years of that date. Here is a picture of the stone columns. Can anyone identify what they could have been? Also is a pic of a pole with a curve at the top. Any ideas on what was used for and possibly era that used this style?
On a side not I got my own MD yesterday. Picked up a Bounty Hunter Discovery 2200 from Radio Shack. AFter popping the batteries in I went outside to give her a test scan and it picked up a zinc object about 5 inches down (according to the display). Did not dig it up yet but it should be a penny.

Anyway, if anyone can help me with these pics that would be great.

Thanks

I like to md in the rain at the play grounds because nobody is there. I just hold a red plastic flag from the local lumber yard drapped over the controlls.

The stone columns and the fence posts look just like an entry into a protected area, maybe the pond we see in the background. Possibly an old swimming hole? It's obvious some kind of road use to go through there. That's my best guess. Monty

And oh yes, the pole with the curve at the top. There should have been an entire fence line with those poles with the curves all facing the same way. It's obvious that they had barbed wire strung on those curved things along the top of the fence. You can still get similar caps for the posts today. The purpose is to keep something in or to keep something out depending on which side of the fence they are. If they are facing in I would guss it was to keep horses in. Horses have a bad habit of leaning on a woven wire fence and eating grass on the othe side. Over a period of time their leaning will break down the fence but the barbed wire keeps them from leaning on the fence. If the curved things are facing out, it would be to keep someone or something from climbing the fence and getting inside. Age of the columns or fence, I can't help you there. Monty

Re: I'm MD'ing in the rain.....just MD'ing in the rain

I remember doing a hunt last summer in heavy rain, and what I did was cover the control box with a large ziploc type freezer bag, and then wrapped it in that press-N-seal plastic food wrap, and it worked really good. The only problem was the headphones, which are not waterproof, and could not be plugged in with all the wrapping. Good luck!
