I'm glad my tractor quit on me

last week my tractor quit in the field, I had to remove the starter
this morning I went to put the repaired starter back in
after tightening the bolts I looked down and I thought I saw part of an elks tooth bead
I got my camera and came back and...YES!!!
I looked around a little and found 2 scrapers, one wide nose chert and the other I think is jasper

Do you guys think it is jasper??

I sure am glad my tractor decided to stop where it did
Note that the elks tooth bead has little notches cut on the bottom side of it, not many of them have the notches cut like that

Re: I'm glad my tractor quit on me

I guess you are. If you had plowed that under it might have taken another hundred years to resurface.

Is that considered the tusk from the elk? If so it's pure ivory.

Great find.

Wow those are cool finds :D You don't wish for mechanical problems but when they happen, it doesn't hurt to find a little something like this 8)

thanks for the kind compliments, I appreciate them

I didn't know about the ivory thing, do you know this for sure?

Yes, an elk has two teeth (I think they are called tusks) that are pure ivory. People that elk hunt always try to get them from the taxidermist for that reason.

RPG, very astute observation! :icon_thumright:

"The canines of elk bulls and cows are known as "elk teeth," "buglers," "ivories," or even elk "tusks." Bulls were once killed for their ivory teeth alone, which are the insignia of a renowned fraternal organization. These unusual Elk teeth, were prized possessions of the Native Americans of the Great Plains. They were used to adorn dresses and robes as well as for necklaces and pendants. Some dresses had in excess of 1000 of them attached as decorative trim."

Thanks Likely Guy. I knew elk had a couple of ivory teeth but have never seen one. After seeing the link you posted, I think that's exactly what larson1951 has here.

Very nice find indeed.

The link Likely Guy posted shows them for sale for $15 to $16 a pair. These of coarse are recent teeth.
I don't know what yours would be valued at. Being what they are, (very unique indian artifacts), if I had found them they would be priceless.

Re: I'm glad my tractor quit on me

thanks Randy, I will allways be very interested to know a value if you could help me,(even though I would not sell them)

once again, thanks much

Re: I'm glad my tractor quit on me

I think my Dad had a pendant with an elks tooth in it from some type of fraternity.
But that one is very nice and much older.

Re: I'm glad my tractor quit on me

Geeze, never too old to learn something new. I've never known of an Elk to have ivory, much less with so much history to boot.

Great find, and thanks for the education!

Re: I'm glad my tractor quit on me

larson, I've seen drilled teeth go for around $35 to $50 each at auctions and those were just regular caninie teeth with no engraving. I'd say yours would go in the $75 to $100 range.
