A young man took me relic hunting to an old rock foundation today. I figured he would last maybe an hour or so, but we finally headed for the truck when darkness prevented us from detecting any more. That young buck wore my 74 year old behind out! He was a trooper, even though we must have dug 50 pieces of iron and no coins, buttons, etc. I am so happy to see a teenager who is genuinely interested in hands on history rather than plopping his butt down somewhere with his eyes glued to the t.v. or his cell phone. We did manage a couple of bullets and a cute little brass eagle. I would love to hear from some of the bullet experts as to what these are. The smaller of the two reminds me of an early Colt, but I am not at all certain. Same for the eagle.....I would LOVE to think it has a Civil War affiliation, but my first guess would be maybe a finial off a mantle clock or something else less exciting than a Civil War piece. Thanks for reading my ramblings on!

Looks like a Sharps carbine bullet and a Colt pistol bullet. Stuff is getting harder and harder to find.

Congratulations on finding a young person who appreciates our hobby. I agree with Smokey on the sharps bullet, but from what I can see in the picture I believe your second bullet may actually be a .44 caliber Watervliet Arsenal bullet. I’m no expert. It’s just my opinion. Stay safe and keep swingin.

Yeap, those brass eagles are a fairly common find over here, I was never sure what they went on, but my guess was fancy 19th C mantle clock.

Great finds and saves of the two bullets and the small brass eagle. Whether the eagle is a CW piece of not, it is a nice find. I too believe it could be from a mantle clock. It is an old piece too.:usflag:
