Re: I'm confused.

That is a great question and I am anxious to see some opinions,however....if you were to dig around my grandfathers grave in the cemetery,I would personally be outraged, but if you were to dig the beaches of Normandy where my grandfather fought, and his brother died,I would see it as saving history

I would be outraged as well. It just seems like people have justifications to hunt where they want to.

Re: I'm confused.

I know if you dig at a cemmetary, people think you're disturbing a final resting place. at the scene of a plane crash I don't know, maybe you'll find more than plane parts. at a battlefield, most generally the deceased have been removed and buried someplace. I'm just guessing.

Re: I'm confused.

Why is it OK for Archaeologist to dig up Graves?

I don't care how old they are!

If you do it, your called a Ghoul!

There are a lot of battlefields where the men were buried where they fell.

Re: I'm confused.

true, but how deep are they buried and are they marked ?

No offense, but that means absolutely nothing. It was where they were put to rest.

Re: I'm confused.

I wrote like a 10 paragraph post to this thread but for some reason it did not post.

Bottom line and this may ruffle some feathers but I have no problem with someone detecting a cemetery or a battlefield if it is done in the right and respectful manner. I've done both and don't feel I've done anything wrong. I even feel I've improved both the cemetery and knowledge of the battles.

I'm leaving work now but I can add more to this later or answer any questions that may arrise.

Happy hunting

Re: I'm confused.

but if they aren't marked, how would you know someone was buried there. and if you didn't know and you dug up some bones, would you call the police or rebury them ? would you be arrested for disturbing a grave ?

It's an issue of morals I think. Digging where people are buried is digging where people are buried be it a cemetery or a battlefield.

Re: I'm confused.

but, most people think of a cemetary as sacred ground, where a battlefield is just that. I don't know.
I won't md a grave yard, but I have no problem with a battlefield. I guess like you said, it comes down to morals

Re: I'm confused.

Detecting on a Battlefield can garner information, formations, etc.there is nothing to be learned from detecting a cemetery and I think it is despicable to even be considered.Things left in a cemetery are tokens from the living to the past, memento's,cherished items of the living and deceased. To gather those items is nothing short of thievery,no way you try to justify it!!!

Your opinion...thanks.

Re: I'm confused.

So it seems that it boils down to religious objections, graveyards being "Sacred Ground" and all being the difference between the two. I wonder how that works for an atheist or agnostic.

Are you just being a wiseass, playing devils advocate or are you really indeed an athesit or agnostic? To be sure, you really ARE asking some good, valid questions - which I commend you for  Unfortunately though, the questions you seek answers to are really 'grey' areas. Some feel strongly one way & some the other. So, whatever you do, I'd keep it to yourself. One thing I know for sure is this...

If you do go digging around cemeteries, DO NOT post it on this site as it won't win you many friends. Just a friendly heads up :icon_sunny:

Re: I'm confused.

Being a wiseass for asking a question on something I was confused on? If you would have read the entire thread you would have noticed I said I was against "digging" in areas where people have died. I was just curious why some think it's ok to dig where people have died if it was a battlefield but not a cemetery. Maybe people are becoming slightly offended because they can't think of a reason why it's different.
