I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

::) Found this strange little item today. It has me totally baffled.? ???? At first I thought it might be some sort of bulb, but that doesn't appear to be the case...... :-\ What I can read of the writing on it side hasn't help either. "Persons - M ------ (Letters damaged) Mfg. Co. - Worcester, Mass." tried an internet search and came up blank...... Anyways pictures below (dime for comparison only). had to add the comparison disclaimer because, I know this group all to well and some smart A** will say looks like a dime to me. :D? :D? :D

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

Persons Majestic Mfg. Co produced bicycle parts since 1892
I believe you have a piece of a bicycle reflector like this one from the `30's:

Thanks Omni......... Now that I know that the missing word is Majestic, it definitely helps.........seems a bit big to be part of a reflector though. If each one of those red pieces in your picture are as big as this, you'd need an I-beam to hold it up. Overall height is about a ? inch and it weight about 2 oz. It's definitely part of a bicycle.......but which part....... ???. and what's the age..... ??? Thanks again..

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

I just recently found something very similar. It has " Something Co. " & a PAT no. " 1872643 " on the back, I think it's the back...
The one I have here is about the same diameter as a quarter, and about 3/4" tall... I did a search and found nothing. Not sure if it could be part of a reflector or not,,, it's not too reflective anymore. I was thinking, I used to see them in old cars & truck as lights, but I sure don't see how it would work for that either, the way it's made... Definitely a good " What it is "
Good luck & Happy hunting~

United States Patent? 4,072,403?
Eigenmann? February 7, 1978?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Retro-reflecting assembly

Abstract
A new method for producing retro-reflecting assemblies of the type comprising a transparent globule having an essentially part-spherical upper portion uncoated for light impingement, and a lower portion associated to a monolayer of focusing and reflective microspheres, the method comprising forming said globule by subjecting a sheet thermoplastic material to heat and pressure in the bite of counter-rotating forming rollers to provide an essentially planar intermediate product having oppositely located bulges at either faces thereof, the globules being obtained by subdividing said product in parts each comprising a pair of opposite bulges. The invention comprises improved assemblies comprising each an asymmetrical globule having the monolayer of microspheres associated to its essentially bottom face and to its peripheral toroidal side face of radius of curvature smaller than that of its upper bulging portion exposed for light impingement.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

After the above conversation I re-examined my find to see if it had a Pat. No. or any other information that might help :-\

This is what my find reads:

42 - 41
PERSONS - MAJESTIC MFG. CO.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

Went straight to the source on this one. I email the company and this is the response I received:

Hi Psgen,

? It is indeed a reflector. That size was used in traffic signage,
stop signs, and other bus and truck reflectors.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

Yes they are reflectors and yes they were heavy, when I was a kid they had big 4'x8' signs in curves and dangerous parts of the road and these reflected white or red in arrows or solid patterns. When a car hit one of the we would pick up the loose ones for sling shot ammo so if you ever got around on old Hi way 75 North of Dallas you would find them for miles in the creek bottoms.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

Ya know, that's what's great about this site...someone, somewhere, almost always has the answer to the question. I have one similar to omnicognic's photo that I found inside the fireplace at an old homesite in LA (that's Lower Alabama). It's about 4-5 inches in diameter, seems to be cast iron, and the reflectors are laid out in a hexagon pattern. Now I now more about it...Thanks folks!

It's another beautiful day in Germany!

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

that top item looks like some kind of part of an old fuse. the description of it and the fact that it has copper on the bottom. it must have something to do with an electrically powered device of some sort. find some really old man and ask him. they seem to know everything.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

I can identify its use, PRECISELY! It is indeed a reflector. It was commonly used in the old style highway guard rail posts. I've dug several out of old posts myself. I used to be a conserbvation officer (game warden) and they work great as deer eyes when mounted side by side in a piece of cardboard and that stuck in the ground on a clotheshanger or steak. Place it way out in a field near a bend in the road where a poacher's headlamps will hit it and watch the bullets fly! Made lots of arrests on those. That was before the "robo-deer" I went out in the garage and found the ones I have and they are identical to yours.

Re: I'm Baffled - Any Help ???????

I've seen these stuck in large boulders that were set along-side a road (natural guards to keep people from driving off a cliff), on the way to Zion's National Park... Years ago.
