Just south of Warsaw on the Mississippi there stands a Moorish castle. Inside, ornate wooden lattice work twists shadows up the walls of a narrow stairway. Railings, doors, windows, ceilings, all are beautifully carved. It is as if you stepped into a rich merchant's home in northern Africa but there is no furniture. George Metz, rich playboy and world traveler of the late 1800s, built the castle for his sweetheart who died before its completion.

Rumor also has it that Metz buried his pet dog Bingo with a big cache of gold somewhere on the property. Numerous attempts to exhume Bingo prove fruitless.

place was called Villa Catherine (for his sweetheart.).

The story as told to me by a drunken Indian in a small bar.

Bingo had traveled with George all over the world.

When Catherine came into Georges' life the dog was alone, unhappy; the dog
hated Catherine and thus George for forgetting about him.

After Catherine died the dog noticed George going out into the yard nightly with
bags and coming back with no bags. Usually, prior to Catherine, George would
always take Bingo to walk on the property, not on each nightly trip now.

The bags were full, and sitting in the cellar of the home.

When Bingo noticed that only two bags were left, he rolled over, stuck his tongue
out, and played dead.

George picked him up, on his nightly trip, and placed him in the hiding place with the
last two bags of loot. They were buried together.

Old Bingo dug up and out that night and lived to an old age at a fancy dog hotel of
the period. Thus, no treasure to be found.

Way to funny....I was in Hannibal Mo this fall and some old folks were telling this story...been looking for some truth in it...

I live about 3 miles from Warsaw, IL
Castle is in Quincy, IL and used by city as state?city welcoming center.
There maybe treasure around and i have some old maps and lots of local history, but the castle is not an area i would put any time in on.

Al Capone hangouts(around Burlington, IA)
Mormon artifacts (last year i found canon ball fron Battle of Nauvoo)Nauvoo, IL
Mississippi River things( steamboat wood lots and old town sites)
Indian artifacts(lots of them)

AND
if above doesn't work try riverboat gambling!!!

There is a known Al Capone hangout in Benld that burned down last year, the Colliseum. Lot of mystery surrounds this place but the owner is an ******* and won't allow anyone to MD on the property.
