(Yankeetown is on the west coast of Florida north of the Tampa area)

At about 6:45 p.m Sunday, an air traffic controller in Jacksonville reported that a 35-year-old twin-engine, fixed-wing Beech 35 Debonair aircraft, traveling from Tallahassee to Vandenberg Airport, lost contact about 14 miles west of Yankeetown, according to the FAA. The Coast Guard says the plane crashed into the gulf shortly after disappearing from radar. A search began at 7 p.m. and resumed at daybreak.

At the Coast Guard's request, the Citrus County Sheriff began using side scan sonar, which uses sound to locate submerged people and vessels, on Monday afternoon. The deputies were continuing to use sonar equipment today. The Coast Guard is also keeping a search vessel on the water.
