If this isn't a Civil War button, I may have to leave the site.

I'm continuing to hunt the area by where Gen. Sherman prepared to invade Savannah to complete his "March to the Sea." So far I've found a modern "twist-loc" back, a fairly recent Police Button, a Revolutionary War (or Siege of Savannah) Crown Badge for an ammo pouch, and a musket ball for a Brown Bess. NOTHING civil war. ??? It rained a good bit the last few days so I figured I'd hit it again. I dug this button from the front side of an embankment from a dug foxhole. It is a one-piece button about 13/16" across. It is smooth on the front and has "* BEST * QUALITY *" and the figure of an Eagle with a shield on its breast to complete the "circle" of writing.

Anybody have any idea as to who would have worn a button like this and when?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl, I'm sure your kidding about leaving, we like you here too much for that! :) But if I'm not mistaken this type of button would date to more like ROUGHLY 1820-1830.

Not leaving the forum. :) May have to leave the Civil War site that won't give me anything from the civil war. I mean, holy crap I can throw a rock and hit the building Sherman stayed in. There are trenches and dug fox holes all over the place and I can't find anything from the Civil War. Good Grief. :'(

i would think that the flat button you found is quite a bit older than the civil war. probably late 1700s early 1800s.

The only "Best Quality" back marks I could find was from an englich company
!820 to 1850. Nice find.

I think I may have found the same reference. The thing I couldn't find was the Eagle with the shield for a breast plate.

Thanks for the help.

Yer finding PRE-CW stuff and wanna leave the site? :o

I agree the button is pre-CW and can't help with the eagle thing either... sorry.

I will, however, congratulate you on a spledorific button! :)

Hi Tony,

Batteries? You mean I have to keep putting batteries in the thing. >:(

I put a set in when I got it. Still there. They are still shiny and everything. ;D

I don't think I am missing much.

I have a real good collection of the Georgia 12th Regiment buttons as shown in the picture. I am also picking up real small things at 6 inches or more.

Just can't figure it out.

I might be interested. I have a couple of rare ones from the 410 Regiment. Pretty much mint. :D

There is a story, not really a story, that you must first ask the mountain's permission before you climb her.

Faithful Sherpas always ask Sagarmatha/Chomolungma (Mt. Everest) before they climb if today is a good day and for permission to be granted.

When the mountain is pleased with your reverence for her, all climbers go up and down alive.

Perhaps if your site is truly a civil war site you need to ask yourself why you want to find these things so desperately. Maybe spirits protect this place and everything is hidden in plain sight because the spirits do not like your intent.

Just food for thought.

P.S. Maybe you got your info wrong and there's just plain nothing there. ;)

Karma is karma. Mine tends to be tough so maybe I should ask someone something. I did ask for permission to go on the land. :)

I want to find Civil war things because it is the war that most interests me and I am only here for 3 months. This is the only place I spend time that has civil war history and relics.

My information about the site is 110% accurate. Within 1000 feet, there are 4 of those big bronze "Historical Site" signs to read about what happened in the area. I can see the historical society building. I can visit the museum inside the historical society building and see their collection of Civil War artifacts from the area. With a rock and good throw, I can hit the building built in 1754 that Sherman stayed in. I can walk to the river crossing where General Davis crossed his men and over 300 people drowned. I can look on any historical map and see the road Sherman took and you can still see that road through the woods. The big bronze sign with an arrow is a pretty dead giveaway as well. The woods are filled with hundreds/thousands of hand dug fox holes and trenches. So the provenance is a good as it gets. The site is as good as it gets. It is just confusing as to the lack of "things" that should be there given the thousands of troops that moved through the area. Is it just so picked over that there is little left and just going to be really hard to find? There have been 3 archeology teams over the years go through the area. I know they are good, but that good?

I may have to perform some kind of ritual. Any ideas? If it's legal in a majority of the states, I'm game.

by the large tree near the trench line close to the largest building --- close by it a man died there he was gut shot -- he was leaning up against the tree and bleeding out --- he tried to get up and move away but fell down unable to move -- he lost buttons there -- while he was wrathing in pain while dying --- the buttons "popped off" --- the buttons are there confederate ones -- after his death the body was found by freinds of his and he was moved and buried else where.

*** seek and ye shall find, ask god for your hearts fondest wishes in good faith that he may grant them to you if it be his will --- Ivan

If there are earthworks all over the place, and historical markers everywhere, then this site may be a little too well-known. Hard to tell who's hunted it before, or how often. It would seem impossible and illogical that everything would be gone--and it is quite impossible for that to be the case...but it is possible for the CW finds to be very, very thin there. I know of a privately owned battlefield in VA that has been hunted continuously since the 70's by many folks, and you're lucky to get a three-ringer out of a four-hour hunt there nowadays. My advice is to treat this as a "hunted out" site...work the fringe areas, and avoid the obvious ones. Pay special attention to slopes, hills, areas of high brush, or detector-unfriendly places. PM me if you need more tips.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Yes. Those are not as rare as from the 10th Georgia Regiment but still pretty rare. ;)

And Buckleboy, the site has been pounded pretty good. I treat it like an old park. I go to the not so easy spots. My scratched up legs and arms from the brambles prove it. Fell in the creek the other day try to stay in the "not so hunted" area. Not so good. Metal detector over my head and praying for an upright landing. Just not easy to understand why nothing is there from the Civil war when over 20,000 troops were camped there for a few days and another 12,000 or so with artillery and calvary met up with them before taking Savannah. They say you can't hunt a site out and I have shown that but all the stuff I find is pre-Civil War or post civil war. Just weird.

Hello Daryl!!

If you are finding pre and post civil war items, obviously the area has not been completely picked over.

Guess the past is making you work a little harder so that when you do make the find it will be the mother of them all.

Keep swinging that thing!!

Best of Luck!!
