A few days ago I read a "what is it" post that had an unknown cartridge find next to a .50 caliber machinegun cartridge. We were having trouble identifying it. I Can't find the post now but I have identified the cartridge. It is a US cartridge as suspected and it is known as a .50 Caliber Spotting Cartridge. It is the same diameter as the .50 cal machinegun except the case is shorter. It was used in the U.S. M8C 50 caliber spotting rifle. The spotting rifle was attached to the M40A1 106mm recoilless rifle, an anti-tank weapon. It was used as an aiming and ranging device to zero in on the tanks. Monty

I originally dug it out of my unread posts. I didn't realize it was that old. Someone else probably solved it before I did? I got to wondering about it and dug it up out of a book I have , "Military Weapons of the World". It gave the dimensions of the cartridges and with that head stamp and size, that's all it could have been. Monty
